Molecules of Emotion

Molecules of Emotion
by Candace B. Pert, Ph.D.

As a medical intuitive, I found Molecules of Emotion a very interesting as well as validating read. In this book, Candace Pert not only tells us how she came to discover the chemical mechanisms that enable body-mind communication but she also shares with us the trials and tribulations of trying to do unconventional research in a very conventional community.

In short, this is the story of Pert discovering the opiate receptor and having to deal with those who felt that she was upsetting the applecart of established scientific thinking. It seems that there were many in power who weren’t ready for a headstrong and ambitious woman coming in and shaking things up. And Pert’s frustration and exasperation followed by surrender and acceptance grab you through her very readable and descriptive style.

Her style is also commendable for being able to take a subject that is heavy on the molecules, receptors, peptides and ligands and preventing it from becoming a cure for insomnia. Let’s just add that to her long list of accomplishments.

Molecules of Emotion is in large measure autobiographical. I understand why she tells her tale that way. But in doing so, I cannot help but feel that she tackles too much. It’s as if there are simply too many threads for her to weave and for us to follow.

To be sure, Pert’s work is a landmark and revolutionary. But by the time I got to the end of Molecules of Emotion, I felt that her serious science had gone just that bit too far toward a New Age love-in.

Molecules of Emotion is available at Amazon.
