Sick Building Syndrome: Stress strikes again!
Monday 3 April 2006
This week I came across a very interesting article about the latest research in what is referred to as sick building syndrome (SBS). SBS is used to describe a situation in which people experience acute symptoms of ill health that appear to be linked to spending time in a particular building.
The symptoms usually affect a group of occupants and range from headaches and fatigue to eye, nose or throat irritation. In all cases, no other source of the symptoms can be identified. And put simply, SBS sufferers feel sick when they are in the building but rapidly feel better when they are not.
Although the condition was defined in the 1970s, the cause has remained a mystery. The most common theories put forth include chemical pollutants, poor ventilation, bacteria, mould, pollen and the level of humidity in a specific building. But the latest findings of some research carried out in London suggests a new approach to the mysterious illness.
Researchers enlisted the help of 4,000 civil servants from 44 buildings in London. The participants were queried in detail about their work environment – their jobs and the buildings in which they perform their duties. What they found was quite revealing.
The levels of SBS symptoms appear to correlate with the workers’ overall stress levels, job demands and the amount of support they were offered both at work and at home. High levels of stress coupled with low amounts of support could be linked to high symptom rates.
While dry air and hot offices exacerbated symptoms, researchers concluded that SBS has more to do with work-related stress than the building itself.
In essence, the findings from this research confirm what forms the basis of my approach as a medical intuitive. Conditions, be it SBS or any other physical ailment, can all too frequently serve as a distraction. We focus on the illness as if it were something external attacking us, the innocents. It becomes the big bad wolf and we become the victims.
Not everyone working in a so-called ‘sick building’ falls ill. But for those who do, their symptoms are very real and they are indeed very sick. So what pushes these individuals over that illness threshold? To put it bluntly, the buildings aren’t making people sick. People are doing that themselves.
Of course, I’m not suggesting that they literally made themselves sick or even chose to be sick. And yet, I would argue that they have participated in their illness – albeit indirectly. How? Well, through their thoughts, their attitudes, their beliefs and their continued presence in an environment which has caused them to overdose on stress.
Emotions, thoughts, attitudes and beliefs are all energetic elements. They are themselves comprised of energy and they stimulate energetic responses. And as we are energetic beings ourselves, we react to this energy. Moreover, how we react is stored in our energy. If we respond positively and constructively, the energy that pulses through us continues to flow. If not, it stagnates and creates energetic blockages. This then can form the basis of illness.
Each week I work with clients to assess their energy. I link with their energy and tune into how they are listening to what their bodies are telling them. I also perceive areas where their energy is blocked and doesn’t flow as it should.
No-one is completely free from blockages, just as no-one is completely immune to negativity or fear. But it’s a matter of degree as to the amount of control we give such feelings in our daily life.
If you work in an unpleasant environment, you might not be able to do anything about it. But you can ALWAYS change how you react to that environment. Let me say that again – your reactions are ALWAYS within your control.
In my comprehensive Intuitive Assessments, I sense and identify energetic patterns that are not productive. I then offer very specific recommendations on how control can be regained over one’s life. If you are experiencing ill-health or self-limiting beliefs, then an Assessment could be a very valuable tool to get on the path to wellness. This week in my Weekly Insights column at PsychicBridges I consider how many of us simply overlook the signs we are given in life. Are you seeing what you are being shown? Read my article in full.
