The Chakra Series – Part I – The Sacred System
Monday 10 April 2006
All is energy and energy is all there is!
Let’s get one thing straight from the beginning. We – you and I – are energetic beings. Our thoughts are energy. Our emotions are energy. Our memories are energy. Our attitudes are energy. Our beliefs are energy. Our dreams are energy.
And while you might never have thought about it this way, we in fact interact with other people, our surroundings and the environment through energy – or rather, an exchange of energy to be precise.
But don’t take my word for it. Science has proved this. That’s right, it’s now an accepted and scientifically proven fact that the human body has an energy system, just like it has a nervous system and circulatory system. With modern technology, this energy can be detected and even measured. Of course, science is merely confirming what energy practitioners have known for centuries.
Indigenous cultures the world over have described these subtle energies in one way or another. The Chinese call it chi. The Tibetans and Indians refer to it as prana. In Jewish cabalistic traditions, you find it as yesod. And Christianity characterises it as the Holy Spirit. So you can hardly dismiss the concept of energy operating within the physical body as a New Age fad.
And here’s where we get to the chakras. The body’s energy is organised within a system. As blood flows through our veins, energy courses through an elegant latticework of channels to reach the body’s energy centres. These so-called power stations are properly referred to as chakras.
Chakra is a Sanskrit term, which roughly translates to “wheel”. The word might sound strange, but did you know that our English words cycle and cyclone actually come from the root word chakra? See, it’s not so foreign after all.
Another reason why we call them chakras is because it’s a fairly accurate term. To energy workers, these centres appear as swirls, spirals or vortices of movement, light and energy. And each of us has seven of these chakras, from the base of the spine rising up to the top of the head.

When referring to the chakras, we always begin at the base of the spine. This is the first chakra. We then move up slightly to the navel area, the home of the second chakra. The third chakra is located in the solar plexus. Rising to the centre of the chest, we find the fourth chakra followed by the fifth chakra in the throat. The centre of the forehead, commonly called the ‘third eye’ is where the sixth chakra is found. And finally the seventh chakra is located on the top of the head.
Each chakra corresponds to and influences specific organs, muscles, ligaments, veins and other parts of the physical body. They also map to components of the endocrine system and are thus closely connected with your moods. But there’s more to the chakra system than this.
Every significant and emotionally charged event you have experienced is imprinted and recorded within your chakras. To know your chakras is to know your history, your personality, your psychology, your spirituality. Your deepest desires and your darkest fears are stored within your chakras.
Most importantly, however, is the fact that your chakras reveal the source of physical illness – and even spiritual struggles.
Besides relating to a particular physical part of the body, each of the seven chakras deals with a specific universal principle, archetype, or life lesson, such as survival, creativity, power, love to name a few.
Chakras can be open or closed. They can pull in energy and they push it out. Energy can flow freely from them or it can be blocked by them. Chakras tell your story. And chakras can bring your story to an end.
Join me over the next seven weeks as I take each chakra in turn to shed some light on what these centres do and how we can interact with them to take control of our health.
