The Chakra Series – Part II – The First Chakra

Monday 17 April 2006

Everybody Altogether Now!

We set off on our exploration of the chakras with the logical starting point – the First Chakra. It is equally the starting point for each of us in our journey to becoming conscious. This is where we become members of the tribe.

The energy of this chakra grounds us. It gives us our first sense of identity. This is where we encounter Jungian archetype – the tribe. All of us are part of some group. And this group gives us a sense of identity, a sense of belonging. The group also gives us our first set of traditions and beliefs. It’s what connects us to those physically around us and helps define who we are – within the context of who they are. As such, I tend to think of it as the Culture Chakra.

The emotional energy of the First Chakra can be easy to feel. Here are a few examples that can elicit a group response:

  • Seeing your national flag or listening to the anthem
  • Hearing news about your country’s troops abroad
  • Watching your favourite team win a major sporting title
  • Attending a friend’s birthday party

Our body’s response to such events is located at the base of the spine. Intuitives see it as the colour red. Energetically, it corresponds to our bones, legs, feet, spine and immune system. These are the parts of the body that physically and literally support us. The most common indications that there’s an issue with the energy of the First Chaka include signs of depression, immune-related illnesses and lower back pain.

What happens in our childhood plays a major part in what happens to us later in life. The initial interactions we have with our family unit and early social environment form the basis of our emotional and mental wellbeing. These psychological foundations are constructed and wired in the First Chakra.

Do we fear for our physical safety, or even survival? Does the threat of abandonment loom over us? Do we have a healthy relationship with logic, order and structure? Do we enjoy the support and loyalty of those around us? These are all First Chakra questions.

I sum up the First Chakra this way – Everybody Altogether Now! This is the message that we are part of everything and connected to everyone around us. Notions of beginnings and ends are illusory. Every thought, belief and action affects the whole. And the health of our First Chakra is determined by our relationship to this truth.

None of us are born thinking for ourselves. On the contrary, our families (read our tribes) give us our initial thoughts. They introduce us to the world and teach us. We inherit their attitude, thought processes and belief patterns about the world around us. Is it a safe place? Or is it dangerous out there? Are we winners? Losers? Or victims?

How we feel about what our tribe has given us can affect our energy. If we feel that society has left us out on our own, the perception of victimisation will cause us to lose First Chakra energy.

Our spiritual challenge is to separate the tribal truths from the tribal fictions. We have to understand that within any tribe there are contradictions. Not all of what we were taught rings true. For example, should all women get married? Are men smarter than women? Do all Asians excel in mathematics? These are the types of questions all of us must ask ourselves in response to the types of sexist, ethnic, racial and religious generalisations we absorb from our tribes.

During our journey to becoming spiritually mature, we have to see beyond the tribe. We must develop our own truths and our own code by which we live. When we move beyond the group’s view and develop our own awareness, we exert positive influences on our energy and biological systems.

As we become adults, we become conscious of power and we learn how to use it. We also learn the concept of responsibility and how it interplays with the choices we’ve made about how we use our power. And as we grow older, we ideally evaluate our beliefs and our choices. Painful though it may be, we must then declare our independence from what no longer works and threatens to hold us back.

In my work as a medical intuitive, I frequently encounter people who acknowledge that the way they are living doesn’t work for them – and in many cases is actually making them ill. And yet, they cannot seem to change. All too often it’s because of another tribal teaching – that people cannot change or that change is too difficult.

To be sure, releasing an old way of living can be very frightening and extremely challenging. But it is not impossible. What it does require, however, is that we leave our comfort zone and that we accept personal responsibility for all that we are – from our personal situations to our health.

Taking responsibility for all that we are is essential to maintain the health of our First Chakra. We stop hiding behind the tribe and start standing on our own two feet. This is when we fully embrace the notion of Everybody Altogether Now!

Next week as The Chakra Series continues we learn more about this sacred system and how we can interact with the different chakras to take control of our health.
