The Chakra Series – Part V – The Fourth Chakra
Monday 8 May 2006
The only way is love!
This week we reach the Fourth Chakra and arrive at the halfway point of our journey. Three chakras lie below and three above. In other words, we are at the heart of the human energy system – and that, dear readers, is no pun.
The Fourth Chakra connects the body (the First, Second and Third Chakras) with the spirit (the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Chakras). It acts as the go-between for physical self and what’s generally termed the higher self. You might say it’s a referee between the two. But without a doubt, this chakra offers a lesson that causes many of us to struggle.
The Fourth Chakra is the centre of our emotions. It’s how we feel about, perceive and react to our circumstances and the world we live in. What is the most prevalent emotion in your life? Is it fear? Despair? Hate? Envy? Or is it hope? Love? Compassion? Whichever one you identify with most (and of course, you have to be honest with yourself) I’m here to tell you that it has greater impact on the state of your health than any other single factor. And it’s all taking place in the Fourth Chakra.
In terms of our power analogy, we said that the first three chakras were about physical aspects of power. But with the Fourth Chakra, we leave the physical and enter the world of the emotions. It’s now about emotional power. And what could be the most powerful emotion of all? Why, it’s love of course.
Having said that, this chakra lies at the heart of the human energy system and having made references to emotions and love, it shouldn’t surprise you that the Fourth Chakra is located in the middle of the chest. You’ve also probably guessed that it’s commonly called the Heart Chakra.
The Fourth Chakra corresponds to the heart (naturally) but as well to the circulatory system, lungs, diaphragm, ribs, shoulders, arms and hands. It is also energetically connected to the breasts and the thymus gland. And its colour is green.
The most common physical ailments associated with Fourth Chakra issues include heart attacks, congestive heart failure, allergies, asthma, lung cancer and breast cancer, in addition to problems with the upper back and shoulders. Energetically these dysfunctions can be mapped to feelings of resentment, bitterness, loneliness and hatred. How we relate to love and our ability to forgive also plays out in this chakra.
It’s not enough to follow one’s heart to master the challenge of the Fourth Chakra. You have to step back and examine the motivation underlying the action. Anything less than true compassion and unconditional love and it’s clear the lesson hasn’t been learned.
If asked, each of us would define love in a different way. However if we compared notes we’d probably see love simultaneously as a tautology and a contradiction. The one thing that we can all agree on is that love is power. It propels us. It repels us. It inspires. It intimidates. It hurts. It heals. And nearly everything we do in life is, in some form or other, about learning how to act out of and react to love.
This isn’t to say that love is uniquely an emotion of the Fourth Chakra. In the First Charka, love can be found within the home. It is the love shared between family members. With the Second Chakra love then extends outside of the home to friends and those to whom we aren’t related by blood. It then evolves into a material kind of love – the love of things – with the awakening of the Third Chakra.
We’ve all heard the expression that we cannot love another until we love ourselves. But if treating ourselves to a nice car, a luxury holiday or a getaway in the Costa del Sol isn’t an expression of Fourth Chakra love, then what are we to do? Well, the first step is to get to know yourself. Sounds fairly straightforward, right? Because how can you love anyone without getting to know them?
And when viewed as a culture that’s exactly what we humans have been doing for the past few decades. We’ve all heard about the me generation. Who am I? What am I all about? Why do I feel this way? All good questions in and of themselves. But then we start to find the answers – and sometimes they can be pretty painful.
In getting to know ourselves, we frequently discover experiences such as abuse or major disappointments that can be disturbing to say the least. And so that we don’t have to go it alone, our society has responded by forming a support group for just about any and every wound or trauma that has been inflicted upon you.
For those who have begun the journey, this can be a tempting point to stop. You’ve gotten to know yourself better. You’ve discovered your pain. And you’ve even found others to share it with. Why move on? Because merely identifying yourself as having been traumatised or wounded isn’t where it ends. There’s more work to be done.
To master the challenge of the Fourth Chakra means being able to see yourself warts and all and then being able to love yourself unconditionally and – this is the tricky part – to forgive those who hurt you. A transition in consciousness takes place when we stop wallowing in the bad that has happened to us and instead acknowledge it and then try to find seeds of good that can grow from it.
When you stop blaming those who hurt you and seeing yourself as a victim, you create the space in your soul for the healing power of forgiveness and acceptance. In taking this step you reassert control over your life and recall any energy or power that your pain continued to hold.
It’s not easy. But then no-one said that the path to a higher consciousness was. Mastering the lesson of compassion, love and forgiveness is the way that we walk through the doorway into the world of the spiritual and of the divine. Join me next week as we step into the realm of the so-called higher chakras.
