The Chakra Series – Part VI – The Fifth Chakra

Communication Central!
Having left the chakra that was all about love and compassion, we reach the Fifth Chakra where expression takes centre stage. We’re now just above the heart and just below the head. In other words, we’re in the throat. So it’s no wonder that I’ve entitled this week’s instalment Communication Central!
The Fifth Chakra embodies the challenge of how we make choices in our lives. It corresponds to the role our thoughts and attitudes play in our choices. And since everything we do involves a choice at some level or other, it follows that there is always an element of Fifth Chakra energy present in every action (read choice) we take.
Because the Fifth Chakra has this knack for always popping up, it is sometimes referred to as being the Holy Grail of chakras – it’s always there and always involved. To be sure, the Seventh and Sixth Chakras direct their energy downward to the Fifth Chakra as the First through Fourth Chakras direct theirs upwards. Energies reach this destination, are processed and expressed – through our choices.
Put slightly differently, it can be said that the Fifth Chakra corresponds to the power of the will. In the beginning, we have no control or power over ourselves or our lives. As we saw with the First Chakra, all this power and control lies externally with those around us – the tribe. From there our personal power develops and matures as we saw with the Second, Third and Fourth Chakra to the point that we reach a level of autonomy.
But there’s more to it than just willpower alone. With the Fifth Chakra, the role of intuition becomes more pronounced. This is the level of consciousness where we start talking about aligning ourselves spiritually to this concept of the Higher Self.
The Fifth Chakra is located in the throat. And that is a fitting location, for it is the seat of communication and expression. This is where we voice our choices and make our will known to those around us. For this reason, some call it the Voice Chakra but more frequently it goes by a more straightforward moniker – the Throat Chakra.
Befitting its physical location, the Fifth Chakra relates to the throat. But it is also connected to the mouth, jaw, teeth, oesophagus, neck vertebrae as well as the thyroid. Blue is the colour that we generally link to this energy centre.
Issues in the Fifth Chakra typically manifest themselves in physical ailments such as thyroid problems, sore throats, gum difficulties, tonsillitis, laryngitis and swollen glands. Energetically, these physical dysfunctions can be mapped to problems and feelings that we have no power over ourselves and are out of control. Being overly judgmental and critical are relevant here as is addiction generally.
With the previous chakra, we said that the challenge was learning to listen to one’s heart. Here the challenge evolves into taking that knowledge and then doing something with it to get closer to our goals. The tools that we have at our disposal are our thoughts, attitudes and, perhaps most importantly, our intuition.
Somewhere along the way of growing up and maturing our thought processes change. We go from doing what we need to do (First Chakra) to doing what is right for us to do. This notion of something being right isn’t in relation to other people. It comes from somewhere deep inside us. It’s personal. It’s individual.
Some view this aspect of the Fifth Chakra as being connected with the Divine or with God. Others, including yours truly, prefer to treat it as being connected with one’s intuition or Higher Self. But no matter which way you want to think about it, the Fifth Chakra is about looking to a new and so-called higher source of guidance in our decision-making.
To open up and incorporate one’s intuitive insights necessitates one embracing faith. In its simplest form, I think of faith as being the ability to trust that things are going to work out – without the need for a guarantee or proof. Fear, on the other hand, can be seen as the antithesis of faith. Whereas faith heals, fear destroys.
And so when we express ourselves in our decisions and in our actions, we have to decide which emotion – faith or fear – is going to be the primary motivator. Living a life of faith is the essence of what the Fifth Chakra is trying to teach us.
There is a lovely little prayer that sums up this chakra quiet nicely:
Grant me
Serenity to accept the things I cannot change
Courage to change the things I can and
Wisdom to know the difference
This week we saw that the Fifth Chakra teaches to live a life of faith, not fear. Next week, we see how the Sixth Chakra teaches the way to wisdom. Join me next week when our journey leads to the realm of the famous Third Eye!
