The Chakra Series – Part VII – The Sixth Chakra
Monday 22 May 2006
It's all in your mind!
This week we come to the penultimate instalment of our series with the Sixth Chakra. Climbing from the Fifth Chakra, the throat and the area of communication, we arrive at the famous Third Eye. This is where thoughts are generated and evaluated. And because our thoughts are so key to our health, I associate this week’s chapter with an old adage – It’s all in your mind!
In the Fourth Chakra, we touched on the development of the emotions. Then, we saw how those emotions are communicated in the Fifth Chakra. But finally we reach a point where the mind kicks in to assess and analyse our emotions, thoughts, beliefs and attitudes. This is the energy centre where the conscious and the unconscious mix.
Are the conscious and unconscious parts of our mind at battle within us? Or do they work together harmoniously to complement one another? Of course, that depends. And again it’s down to those motivating factors we’ve seen before – faith and fear.
The challenge this chakra presents us is to learn to distinguish between thoughts motivated by faith and those tainted with fear. We start to learn our own minds. It’s not merely about independence as that could have connotations of isolationism. On the contrary, the Sixth Chakra is all about opening the mind.
And an open mind is objective. It is detached. It seeks direction from within. This should start to sound familiar to those who’ve either read about or worked on personal development of intuitive insight. This is the chakra where the outer senses, such as sight and hearing, meld with the inner senses, for example clairvoyance and clairaudience. Accordingly, the Sixth Chakra is also known as the ESP Chakra. This is where we stimulate our natural abilities to engage with what lies beyond the mundane and physical reality of our world.
With references to the Third Eye, ESP and the mind, you’ve probably already surmised that the Sixth Chakra is located in the head. To be precise, it is found in the centre of the forehead, lying in between and slightly above the eyebrows.
On a physical level, the Sixth Chakra corresponds to the brain, ears, eyes, nose, the nervous system as well as the endocrine system – namely the pituitary and pineal glands. It is represented by the colour indigo. It makes sense that its dark blue is a mixture of the Fifth Chakra’s blue and the Seventh Chakra’s violet.
The most common physical ailments associated with Sixth Chakra issues include brain disorders and tumours, stroke, blindness, hearing problems, seizures, learning disabilities and disorders involving the entire spine. At an energetic level we can map Sixth Chakra dysfunctions and ailments to issues with mental and reasoning abilities, unwillingness to engage in self-exploration, continual acceptance of something as true when it is known to be false, being overly judgmental and refusing to allow oneself to change and grow.
To be sure, the Sixth Chakra can be viewed as the consciousness centre. We’ve already said that it challenges us to examine our thoughts, attitudes and beliefs – in short our way of living. But how do we do that? It’s impossible if we remain as one with ourselves. Instead we have to step outside our bodies and our situations to gain an external (read impersonal) vantage point. To gain the objectivity we need to become more conscious we have to gain some distance. We have to detach.
Using words like objective, impersonal and detached could suggest that we stop caring about the situation or issue we are examining. But it’s not that at all. Rather the goal we are trying to reach with the Sixth Chakra is the ability to examine something be it a problem or ourselves without participating in it. Because to participate in it makes us vulnerable to fear and any other negativity that might be present.
Put slightly differently, this chakra is encouraging us to still our mind such that external influences have no power over us. We obtain clarity of mind. And this is where truth is separated from illusion. It’s pretty powerful stuff, especially when you consider that becoming more conscious ushers in something that can strike fear in the hearts of even the bravest of us – change.
As the Sixth Chakra develops and we become more conscious we learn. And learning necessitates discarding the old – what we used to think of as true – for the new – what we now know to be true. This means that life as we know it is threatened. Yesterday is safe and comfortable like a broken-in pair of shoes. We’ve just about got to grips with the present. But the future – how do we control it? How do we stem the flow of change and preserve the status quo – the stability?
To the conscious, the answer is easy. We cannot control the future. Yes all right, we can influence it but we are powerless to control it. Therefore, the only thing we can do is to remain in the present moment. This is where the power is. The now is something we can control. Our tools? Hopefully it’s clear by now. They are our thoughts, attitudes and beliefs together with our detached awareness.
So what does this have to do with our health? Well, the Sixth Chakra corresponds to the mind as well as the brain. The mind is the seat of thought and perception. It is the command centre of the energy body whereas the brain is the command centre of the physical body. The brain transforms thought into action. In other words, control the thought process and you control the physical body – including illness and disease.
By living in the present moment and by detaching from fear, we find truth. With the truth we can create a life of meaning and purpose. And all of this empowers the spirit – that life-force that is so powerful that it can restore health where there was illness and disease.
There’s only one more chakra left in our journey. Next week we reach our destination at the Seventh Chakra where the physical meets the spiritual. Join me next week for the conclusion of the Chakra Series!
