Why aren't the chances of surviving cancer better?

This past week new statistics were released in the UK that surprised, stunned and even shocked the public at large as well those in the medical community. It would seem that the chances of surviving cancer in the UK are at present below the European average.

And more interestingly, the only countries where survival rates of breast, lung prostate and colorectal cancer are lower are the newest members of the European Union – in other words the former Eastern Bloc states.

The good news, however, is that the UK’s survival rates for cancer are improving. The bad news is that they remain so low when all things are considered.

As a result, serious questions are being asked to understand why the rates aren’t higher – much higher. After all, billions after billions of pounds are being poured into the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). There is a national cancer strategy that has brought in more specialist staff and more equipment than ever before.

Politicians and healthcare experts alike are calling for the speed and quality of care provided to cancer patients to once again be examined and for anything missed by previous studies to be resolved once and for all.

When asked what’s undermining Britain’s survival rate, many scratch their heads. We hear that it’s complicated, multifaceted and far from obvious. And then the discussions turn to what it’s not.

It doesn’t appear that the British population are reluctant to go to their doctor when they suspect that something is wrong with their health. So, you can’t put it down to the famous British stiff upper lip mentality.

People appear to be going to their GPs (general practitioners) regularly. And when they do, the NHS seems to be doing what it should be. Those who are suspected are being referred for specialist consultations. If anything, the NHS says that people are now being over-referred. But that’s not causing the problem.

Perhaps then it’s the treatment targets? Well, actually no. The targets are being met and people are receiving treatments faster than they ever have before.

So what is it, then? Why are your chances of surviving a cancer diagnosis so low in the UK?

Those in government and in the traditional medical establishment will continue to debate this for some time to come – probably until the next set of statistics comes out.

As a member of the alternative and holistic health community and as someone who successfully healed himself of non-curable, degenerative and debilitating disease, I offer this insight. It’s time we started looking at the patients and what’s going on inside them – beyond the cancer.

It’s my observation that too many of us are looking for that magic bullet that we can take once a day and will cure our ailment without disrupting our lives. We are addicted to a way of thinking that a drug – if we could just find it – will cure us.

To be sure, every time a new candidate comes on the market we launch into a national and oftentimes very heated debate about whether it should be offered by the NHS. Perhaps you recall all the Herceptin hype.

I am not suggesting that improvements cannot be made to the quality of treatment provided to cancer sufferers in Britain. What I’m suggesting is that we should introduce a new factor into the discussion about why survival rates aren’t higher than they are.

This new factor? It’s the most obvious and yet the one that’s at the bottom of the list. It’s as if we will examine anything and everything else before we focus on the patient.

Just last week I wrote on how too many of us believe that whether we get cancer (and for that matter survive it) is down to fate. We feel it’s out of our hands. And so we look for the doctors, nurses and pills to cure us.

Will the rate improve? I believe it will. But at what cost? Countless billions more will be directed at finding treatments that sit within the comfortable confines of traditional medicine which allow us to take a backseat in our care and hopefully cure.

I, however, advocate a different route. I promote the notion that we should take a very active role in our health. And this means that we have to look at our physical as well as spiritual bodies. In so doing, we are challenged to consider our role in our illnesses through our attitudes, beliefs and thoughts.

Every day I work with people through my Medical Intuitive Assessments in which I evaluate their energy systems – their thoughts, attitudes and beliefs and what it’s doing to their physical bodies. I then offer guidance on what to do to improve their lives.

If you want to live a more authentic, happier and healthier life, then you might want to consider one of my Assessments. If you’re suffering from an illness, I may just be able to offer insights into that burning question why? And if you are healthy, then an Assessment could be that ounce of prevention. And finally, this week over at PsychicBridges, I help someone who’s been given a reading as a gift. Find out why I consider a reading to be perhaps the easiest, greenest and most eco-friendly gift out there! Check out my article here.

Until next week,
