Is intuition really just imagination?

When people find out that I’m a professional Medical Intuitive, there’s the standard list of questions I’m asked. They range from whether I really believe in what I do to what makes me so special. Then there are what I consider to be better questions. I say they are better because they come from a place of curiosity – they are neutral. And one of the most common of these such questions forms the basis of this week’s note.

The question I’m referring to actually comes in a number of different guises. For example, some people ask me how do I know that I’m not just making it up when I do a reading. And then, others want to know how I can tell that I’m not just seeing what I want to see. They come at it from various perspectives, but the underlying question is the same:

What’s the difference between
intuition and imagination?

The easiest answer would be to say that you just know. Imagination is imagination and intuition is intuition. But that sounds dismissive and isn’t helpful when the person asking is genuine. So, let’s dig into this one a little.

I suppose the confusion stems from where we perceive imagination and intuition to come from. For the purposes of our discussion, let’s say that the source is that place that our minds take us to when we close our eyes.

We know this place. It’s what we call our mind’s eye. This is where we visualise (read imagine). Now, I can hear some of you out there already saying that you can’t visualise. So, let’s try this. Look around the room you’re in right now. Take a good, hard look. Now, close your eyes and remember it. Can you see it? Of course, you can. And now, let’s play with it a little. You know what an elephant looks like. So with your eyes closed, put an elephant in that room. Bravo – congratulations, you have just visualised (aka imagined).

The ability to imagine or visualise doesn’t receive the respect that it should. Those who are good at it aren’t just glorified daydreamers. These are the people who can control their minds, improve their health and take advantage of the much-talked-about Law of Attraction. It’s a skill and it takes practice.

But you must keep this in mind – with imagination, you are the director. You’re calling the shots. What you see is, for all intents and purposes, what you want to see.

Intuition, on the other hand, is cold, detached and objective. While it still originates from within us, it’s as if it has very little to do with us. What I mean by that is that it’s not emotional. Imagination is by its nature emotional – it’s something we have created and as such it’s something in which we are invested.

Another characteristic of intuition is that it’s subtle. It’s not accompanied with claps of thunder that stop you dead in your tracks. That’s the Hollywood version of intuition. In reality, it’s very quiet. And in today’s world it’s easy to overlook.

Our intuition is constantly talking to us. The problem is that too few of us are listening. Classic examples include thinking of someone just before they ring you, immediately feeling safe with someone who you’ve just met and knowing that something’s wrong when there are not obvious indicators suggesting otherwise. Intuition is usually trying to get your attention when you feel something but when you try to figure out why “you just can’t put your finger on it.” It’s no wonder then that it’s called the voice of hunches.

Intuition is always there. It’s always talking. But it rarely communicates literally. The language of intuition is the language of symbols. Many times it’s easier to just dismiss what we are perceiving because we don’t want to have put in the effort to decipher the message. But you know what? You get better at it. You get faster at it. Learning to use and rely on your intuition is a skill. But like any skill you get out of it what you put into it.

I have spent years honing my intuition. I trust it and my clients trust it. But I always urge everyone to ultimately master their own intuition. If you are struggling to learn how to use your intuition or any other aspect of your energy, you might want to consider a Medical Intuitive Assessment or if you’re ready to work one on one with me, then an Intuitive Life Coaching session. Becoming more intuitive will change your life!

And finally, this week over at PsychicBridges, I look at how Relationship Readings aren’t just for lovers. There’s so much more to these readings and as such they shouldn’t be limited to the romantic context. Read my article here.

I always welcome your thoughts and feedback on IntuitiveBridges, so let me hear from you by clicking here.

Until next week,

Kindest regards,
