If you want to change your life,
start with your BELIEFS!
As a Medical Intuitive and Life Coach, I spend a lot of time working with people to help them to appreciate the impact that their beliefs have on their lives. When I do a reading for someone, I become very intimately aware of and acquainted with what that person believes about themselves and the world at large. I also tune into what role those beliefs play in their lives. Do their beliefs give them confidence and warm feelings? Or do their beliefs knock them down or pull the carpet out from under them at the earliest opportunity?
Having done this sort of thing for years, these kinds of impressions come almost instantaneously. That’s the easy bit. What’s much more difficult is trying to guide my clients to a place where they are comfortable acknowledging and then willing to do something about those beliefs that do them more harm than good.
It constantly amazes me how many people tell me that they have no idea about what they believe about themselves or even about life in general. These are fully grown, mature, intelligent adults. The fact that they are consulting me as a Medical Intuitive tells me that they are at least open if not simply curious about the whole mind, body, spirit connection. And yet, so many of them simply shrug their shoulders, pause and try to fob me off with an I dunno.
So this week, I want to get all of you out there thinking about your own belief system. Now before you try to tell me that you don’t know what you believe – and you would if I would let you get away with it – let’s start with a few definitions and ground rules.
Our belief system consists of the ideas, thoughts, opinions, superstitions, biases and prejudices that we have. They form a prism, if you will, through which we see the world around us, including ourselves and how/where we fit in to it. This is where and how we formulate what is “real” in our lives. That’s right, our beliefs dictate our reality.
Beliefs tell us how to act, what to think, what to eat, what to wear, where to live, whom to marry, what kind of car to drive, etc. The list goes on and on. There’s very little – if anything at all – in your life that isn’t influenced in some way or other by your beliefs. In short, they are the very essence of who you are and what you do.
For the most part, beliefs don’t just happen. They are taught to us from a very early age by our parents and they continue to develop and evolve throughout our lives. Society programs us. Governments condition us. The sources of and influences on our beliefs are endless. And yet, all too often we don’t give our beliefs a second thought.
Many of us never stop even for one second to consider what we believe. And still fewer of us will ever go as far as to challenge those beliefs. Instead we go about our lives adhering to limiting, outdated or even nonsensical beliefs. How many times have you heard the refrain – “I know that I shouldn’t believe this but I do.”?
To change anything in our lives, we have to change how we act, feel and think. But to do that we have to change our belief system to encompass the possibility of that particular goal. As Henry Ford famously said, “Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right.”
If we do not stand up to our beliefs, they will remain unchanged and will continue to dictate our lives. And to some extent that’s fine. We all have beliefs that are good and empower us. Those beliefs should be encouraged and if possible strengthened. But when our beliefs limit, discourage or prevent us from living life to its fullest, then something needs to be done.
My challenge to you, dear readers, is to take that first step to living a more authentic life by getting to grips with your own belief system. Sit down with a pen and a piece of paper. Make two vertical lines such that you have three columns.
In the first column, make a list of what you believe to be true about life, about the world around you and about yourself. In the second, column try to figure out where each belief came from – your parents, school, friends, religion, society, etc. In the third column, ask yourself what impact each belief has on your life. Does it help you? Empower you? Make you feel better about yourself? Or does it make you feel bad about yourself or in some way limit you?
If you take the time and put some effort into this exercise, what you will have is a good start to gaining some very valuable insights into the principles that guide your life. While this is only the first step, it’s essential to identify those beliefs that disempower you and that need to change.
What you do with this information is up to you. Some of you will go on as you were. Others of you, however, will decide that business as usual isn’t good enough. If you fall into the second group, then you may want to consider working with someone as this can be a rather daunting journey to go it alone.
Every day I work with clients who have chosen to empower themselves to make the changes that they need to live a healthier and more authentic life.
